Kjerag, Silverback
Norway, Rogaland
On the north face of Kjerag, the 1,100m wall rising above the south shore of the Lysefjord, Jon Egil Auestad and Jan Eivind Danielsen (Norway) completed a new route on September 9 and 10. The two had explored the upper route earlier in the summer, approaching by the climb Hoka Hey, because the bottom of their intended line was wet; they returned in September to add the start and free the full climb.
The new route shares a start with Nordøstpassasjen (“Northeast Passage,” Båsen-Bjørgen-Jensen, 1995) and then climbs between that route and La Vida Es Bella (Marin-Vales, 2005), crossing the latter about two-thirds of the way up. The route is called Silverback (1,000m, 20 pitches, 7b+).
