Canada, Canadian Rockies
In early September, Sonnie Trotter climbed a new route Castles in the Sky (5 pitches, 5.14a) on Castle Mountain. The route, which he established with Sam Eastman, took 10 days to redpoint and ascends an overhanging prow on the lower limestone band of the mountain, topping out on the large, flat shelf called the Goat Plateau.
In November, Maurice Perreault and Colin Bissonnette climbed a moderate new mixed route on the north face of Mt. Hurd, located in the Ottertail Valley, outside of Field, BC. Lost in the Mountain (9 pitches, WI3 M3) climbs up an icy gully just right of the only other route on this face, Playboy Bunny, established by Perreault in 2011
In the final week of November, Raphael Slawinski and Ian Welsted climbed a new route on the northeast aspect of Mt. Kidd, which they called Bigg Kidd (150m, WI5 M7+). The route ascends a steep and discontinuous ribbon of ice on Kidd’s highest rock band and involves a sustained section of steep drytooling.
In early March 2014, Jay Mills and Steve Holeczi established a new mixed climb on Loder Peak that they called Coire Dubious (600m, M5). The line climbs just left of Doors of Perception (600m, M6), and was established ground up with no bolts or fixed protection.
