Titan, east face, Jade Gate (not to summit); Cottontail Tower, east face, Free Gaza
Utah, Fisher Towers
In winter 2014, Jim Beyer soloed two new routes in the Fisher Towers. He reported that he did not place any heads on the climbs, a technique for which he has been criticized on some of his other Fisher Towers routes (AAJ 2013).
In January, Beyer climbed a new line on the east face of the Titan, which he called Jade Gate (VI A4). The five-pitch route lies approximately 200’ right of World’s End, climbing to the Finger of Fate. Beyer did not summit because of ice above the Finger. He reported over 120 beak placements on the route, with up to 29 placements in a row. He drilled two short ladders with buttonhead bolts on pitches three and four, and placed standard bolts at the belays.
In February, Beyer climbed a line on the east face of Cottontail Tower, which he called Free Gaza (VI A4+ R). The six-pitch route lies 100’ right of his earlier first ascent Intifada [originally graded A6 but subsequently down-graded to A4/A5] and climbs to the summit. He took about 50 beaks on the route and reported 44 placements in a row on pitch three. A number of buttonhead bolts were placed on lead in addition to bolted belays.
