Nursultan, solo ascent of northwest face and descent with skis
Kazakhstan, Tien Shan, Zalisky Ala-Tau
Climb Year: 2013.
Publication Year: 2014.
In July, Jonathan Jay, an American living in Almaty, soloed the northwest face (750m, Russian 3B) of Nursultan (4,330m, formerly called Komsomol). After skiing a few turns down the normal route on the southwest ridge, he dropped onto the northwest face and skied and sidestepped a couloir through the upper face. Local climbers said both the solo and the ski descent probably were firsts.
