Piramidalny and Other Peaks, Pamir Alai. It was not difficult to get to the region. The Russians tooks us in a helicopter. The cirque of towers was lovely with great possibilites of new routes, although the granite was not always of the best quality. Up to 4000 meters lichen and dirt in the cracks were a nuisance. Paolo Tamagnini and I climbed some new routes on “Little Asan,” some 4000-meters-high .OnP 4810(15,781 feet), the highest tower in the immediate valley, we climbed the west pillar, crossing at times a route done in 1990 by Russians when they traversed Asan-Usan-P 4810. The climbing was complicated by ice in the cracks. Tamagnini made a fine solo route on the north face of Piramidalny (5507 meters, 18,068 feet).
