A.A.C., New York Section

Publication Year: 1982.

A.A.C., New York Section. During the year the Section continued its active public lecture program, now at the Explorers Club Auditorium, with all net proceeds being dedicated to the Club or climbing-related causes. Among these were the Ranch, the Journal, and the Everest East Face Expedition. Two spring outings were held; one in Keene Valley and the other in North Conway, New Hampshire, hosted by John Case and John Bouchard, respectively. The Section newsletter, edited by Fran Allen, adopted a new format and has become a lively forum of information exchange among Section members. Undoubtedly, the highlight of the season was the Annual Section Dinner in October, a black-tie benefit for the Library, in New York’s Union Club. Among the record 140 members and guests in attendance were Price Zimmer- mann and no less than 7 past presidents plus several Club directors, officers and out-of-town visitors. Special guests, Dorene and Tom Frost, presented a very moving multi-media retrospective of Tom’s life and philosophy as a climber encompassing his memorable ascents in Yosemite, Canada and the Himalaya. The evening concluded with the first showing of his film on the 1979 Ama Dablam expedition. This ABC-TV special will be shown in 1982 and is almost certain to be a prize winner at the leading film festivals. Hosts for the evening, in addition to the Section Chairman, were Tony Horan, Dinner Chairman, and Jim McCarthy aided by Committee Members Jim and Diane Billipp, Priscilla Briggs and Gael Gahagan-Johnson.
