A.A.C., Alaska Section

Publication Year: 1982.

A.A.C., Alaska Section. This past year marked a resurgence of activity in the Section. Efforts to renew interest in the A.A.C. was rewarded by an increase in membership, the creation of a newsletter, and greater participation in Section committees. The highlight of 1981 was our annual banquet held at Denali National Park which attracted the largest attendance ever. Susan Havens, Andy Embick, and Jack Duggan provided the banquet entertainment. Sue showed slides of the 1980 Women’s Expedition to Dhaulagiri that attempted the difficult Pear Route. Andy reviewed the current state of the art of ice climbing in Valdez, while Jack took us on a ski tour of the great Bagley Icefield.

Climbing activity within the Section was very high, with members participating on expeditions to Nepal, China, Patagonia, Mexico, the Cascades, and the many ranges of Alaska.

The outlook for the Section is promising with a further increase in its activities anticipated. The word is out: the Alaska Section is alive and well!
