Alpamayo, Kitaraju, Santa Cruz Guides were active in the Cordillera Blanca. On June 15 Italian Giancarlo Grassi and Frenchman Jean-Noël Roche guided six others up the southwest face of Alpamayo in five hours. Tone Valeruz is said then to have descended the left side of the face, where it is less high and less steep, on skis. The next day he repeated the route solo in only two hours. On June 17 Grassi and Roche climbed the north face of Kitaraju. Roche descended the face on skis. Toward the end of June Roche and Gérard Guijarro repeated Sombardier’s route on the southwest face of Santa Cruz.
