Haystack, Southwest Face, 1979. In the summer of 1979, from the lowest point of the south end of the southwest face of Haystack, I soloed up the slab leading to a left-diagonalling crack above the small roofs. I followed the crack for a single rope-length and then straight up a severe pitch to a traverse right. I climbed a left-arching crack (F9) and traversed right to a 400-foot series of F7 cracks, dihedrals and chimneys to the top. I drilled five holes. (NCCS IV, F10, Al.)
