North America, United States, Alaska, Winter Ascent of Mount McKinley

Publication Year: 1967.

Winter Ascent of Mount McKinley. As the Journal goes to press, we receive word of the successful winter ascent of Mount McKinley, completed on March 1 by Art Davidson, Dave Johnston and Ray Genet. The party was flown to the Kahiltna Glacier on January 29. While ferrying loads unroped on January 31, tragically the Frenchman Jacques Batkin fell into a crevasse at 8000 feet and was killed. Batkin was a member of Lionel Terray’s expedition to Mount Huntington and one of the first pair to reach the summit. The party was led by Gregg Blomberg; other members of the party were Shiro Nishimae, Dr. George Wichman and John Edwards.
