Iowa Mountaineers

Publication Year: 1996.

Iowa Mountaineers. Over 4,000 individuals participated in the club's instructional courses and climbing outings in 1995. Many of the courses were offered for University of Iowa academic credit.

The year began with over 200 members in cross-country skiing courses at Devils Lake State Park in Wisconsin. These were taught by Jim and Margie Ebert over six winter weekends. Also at Devils Lake, some 2,200 participated in the club's weekend hiking courses, directed by Jim Ebert throughout the spring, summer and fall. Over 100 members took a one-day basic rock climbing course taught by Jim Ebert. The toprope climbing courses concluded with members from 12 states taking the week-long basic climbing course. These courses properly prepare members to toprope safely on their own.

In March, April and October there were hiking trips, led by Margie Ebert and Steve Guthrie, to the Havasupai area of the Grand Canyon. In the summer the club sponsored a hiking/climbing outing in the Banff area in Canada.

In 1996, besides the regular instructional courses at Devils Lake and hiking in the Grand Canyon area, the club will offer climbs of Devil’s Tower, Wyoming, the Third Flatiron in Colorado, and hiking the Na Pali Coast in Kauai. Foreign trips will include hiking New Zealand's Milford and Routeburn Tracks; climbs in Peru of Huascaran and peaks in the Quebrada Quilcayhuanca; and a climb of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania together with hiking around Mount Kenya in Kenya.
