Carstensz Pyramid, 1993. Our expedition consisted of 6 French climbers, 3 Belgians, 2 Spaniards and an Englishman. It took us six days and seven flights to reach our jumping-off place for the seven-day trek to the mountain. Twelve climbed to the summit on November 1 and 2. Gérard Vionnet and I pioneered the new route up the 1000-meter-high north face to the top of a tower to the right (west) of the summit. We then followed the ridge east to the summit. The rock was excellent limestone. We made the climb with little previous information and between two rainstorms.
