Publication Year: 1993.

Everest Solo Winter Attempt and Death of a Sherpa, 1993. Spaniard Fernando Garrido made an unsuccessful solo attempt on the South Col route on Mount Everest. He was helped by a few Nepalese climbers to get safely through the Khumbu Icefall and to stock Advance Base at 6400 meters. On January 15, 1993, Ang Tshering Sherpa was carrying a load into the Cwm when he plunged into a bottomless crevasse. On February 3, Garrido made a bid to reach the South Col, but he was too tired to get above 7750 meters. This was his high point.
