Nevado Santa Cruz, South Face and Other Climbs, 1984 and 1985. Marco Suarez and I climbed on August 4, 1984 the south face of Santa Cruz (6241 meters, 20,476 feet). We followed the left side of the wall until we reached the southwest ridge at around 19,700 feet, thence over the ridge to the summit. Werappelled down the center of the south face, or Jaeger route. A bivouac at 18,400 feet was necessary. On July 6, 1985, I climbed alone the west buttress of Huascarán Sur. After an attempt on Chacraraju Sur by its south face, I went to climb the south face of Artesonraju, which I did in three days from Carás. Since the level of Lago Parón has greatly decreased, boats or rafts are no longer necessary; a trail runs along its north side.
