A.A.C., Sierra Nevada Section

Publication Year: 1986.

A.A.C., Sierra Nevada Section. The Sierra Nevada Section has been active on the crags and peaks of the world, and in addition members have conducted the less glamorous day-to-day contacts with landowners and administrators that are so vital to the future of our sport. Our Section climbing activities took us from The Pinnacles, by way of the superb granite of Lovers Leap, and to the dazzling granite domes of Tuolumne Meadows. On the social side we again skied in the Sierra, with fine cooking and hot pools thrown in, had a barbeque by the San Francisco Bay, and logged our second Section Banquet, where the featured presentation was the ascent of the west face of Baffin Island’s Mount Thor by Eric Brand and Earl Redfem.

At the end of the year we learned of a planned winter closure of Yosemite’s legendary Camp 4. While of itself not welcome news, we have had assurances that this is a temporary measure. The Section’s attempts to have Camp 4 recognized as an historic site have not so far been successful ! On a more optimistic note, we are to meet soon with the Park Superintendent to discuss the long awaited implementation of Yosemite’s Master Plan.
