Iowa Mountaineers. In 1982 our membership exceeded 1000, scattered over some 35 states. Many of the courses and mountain camps again were offered for two hours of credit by the University of Iowa. Under Jim and John Ebert’s instruction, 85 members completed the six concentrated one-week basic rock-climbing courses held at Devils Lake State Park, Wisconsin. Sixty members completed the three-day weekend rock-climbing classes. Two general weekend outings were held at popular Devils Lake, with an average attendance of 50 members.

In late December and early January, 18 members enjoyed a week of excellent cross-country skiing in Yellowstone National Park with Jim Ebert and Florian Studer as leaders. In January and March more than 60 members backpacked in Grand Canyon National Park. The travelogue series had an average attendance of 450 people for six programs, while the annual banquet in April attracted 140 members.

The club sponsored one major foreign expedition to Peru and an intensive snow-and-ice course in the Purcells of British Columbia.

In July 61 members headed into the Quebrada Rurec in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca. This was the club’s eighth Peruvian trip led by John Ebert as well as the largest mountaineering group to climb in Peru. Thanks in great part to the presence of an excellent staff of climbing leaders, many of the major peaks in the Rurec region were climbed. Following the Rurec Base Camp, 24 members stayed on to ascend Huascarán, Peru’s highest mountain.

In August a group of over 70 participated in a concentrated snow- and-ice course in the Purcells. With 11 days of perfect weather, over 214 summit registrations were logged on such peaks as Mount Peter, Mount Cleaver, Commander, Mount Jumbo, Glacier Dome, McCoubrey Peak, Granite Peak, and Mount May.

In 1982 foreign trips are planned for New Zealand in January and Tanzania in July. The summer mountain camp will be in the Canadian Rockies in August along the Banff-Jasper Highway.
