Nevado Rurec and Other Peaks. Guiding for the Iowa Mountaineers, Franz Mohling and I helped to establish various routes in the Quebrada Rurec region. Counting from Nevado Rurec south to Uruashraju, we named the three minor peaks Rurec #1, #2 & #3. On July 6 Larry and Steve Swanson, Bob Joy, Richard Jones, Jeff Lund and I strolled up Rurec #3 while Franz, Sarah Chaney and Doug Tody did the same on Rurec #2. On July 7 the above personnel plus Jeff Crystol, Raji Thron and Lew Krimen climbed Rurec #1. This included two moderately difficult hard snow-and-ice pitches. By its southwest buttress, we climbed a new route on Nevado Rurec (5700 meters, 18,701 feet) two days later. I led the lower, hard-snow pitches while above, Franz excavated a trough through hip-deep powder to the summit ridge. Our party, Sarah Chaney, Jeff Lund, Bob Wilson, Steve Howe, Richard Jones, Jeff Cristol, Phil Cloud and Doug Tody, converged near the summit with the Swanson brothers, who had just completed a more direct face route 300 meters to the southeast.
