Overlook Dome, Jacket Off

California, Sierra Nevada, Golden Trout Wilderness

image_1On November 2, Daniel Jeffcoach, Vitaliy Musiyenko, and I embarked on a nearly 30-mile approach from Monache Meadows to the Kern River region to scout some intriguing formations. We camped at the natural bridge feature near Lava Falls on Golden Trout Creek. The next day, we approached a dome-like formation below Overlook Mountain. This formation is clearly visible from the Needles, 20 air miles away.

We chose the best-looking line on the west face and climbed a direct route to the summit. Jacket Off (750’, 5.10a) featured face climbing on textured rock with intermittent cracks and sparse but adequate protection. There is definitely room for more routes, especially if willing to face climb. We called the formation Overlook Dome.

On November 4, we explored Tower Rock, our main objective of the trip and also devoid of routes. Although it is a significant wall, its ledgy and vegetated character deterred us. With a lot of time and work, one could surely find a proud route up it. Instead, we spent the day appreciating this unique corner of the Sierra before the long hike out.
