Ushba North Peak, Ski Descent from Foresummit
Georgia, Caucasus Mountains
In May, Tiphaine Dupérier and Nouria Newman (both from France) made a nearly complete ski descent of the North Peak of Ushba via the north ridge and northwest face. Ushba’s North Peak (4,690m) was first skied in 2017 by Miroslav Pet’o (Slovakia), following the peak’s original route to the south and east.
Dupérier and Newman climbed Ushba’s north ridge on May 18, leaving their skis at around 4,500m and continuing along the narrow ridge for another 30 minutes before poor snow turned them around, close to the top. They returned to the skis and then to the North Peak’s foresummit at around 4,450m, then began their 800m ski descent to the Ushba Glacier, mostly on the steep northwest face. Two 30m rappels were made to pass seracs low on the face.
