Lappviktinden, Lappblad
Norway, Nordland
In August, Juho Knuuttila (Finland) rope-soloed a new route up a shallow buttress on the northeast side of Lappviktinden (1,338m), at the south end of Skjomenfjord, south of Narvik. The line likely shares the first two pitches of Café Solo (5+ Norwegian or 5a/5b), established by Krister Jonsson (Sweden) in 2008, before leaving to the left.
Knuuttila free soloed the first 100m and then continued by roped soloing; he said the climbing was mostly Norwegian 5, but with a few pitches of 6- and possibly one 6. He started the climb at 10:30 a.m. and reached the summit at 7 p.m. Rain began falling shortly after he topped out.
The new route had been attempted up to three-quarters height by Fredrik Aspö a few years earlier. Knuuttila called his route Lappblad (600m, Norwegian 6).
