On June 5, Jack Kuenzle (USA) climbed and descended the West Buttress route on Denali (20,310’), using skis, in 10 hours, 14 minutes, 57 seconds. Kuenzle followed the Rescue Gully cutoff between the two highest camps on the route. The previous fastest round-trip time on the West Buttress was 11:44, set on foot by Karl Egloff (Ecuador) in 2019.
Kuenzle had an extraordinary year of speed records on U.S. mountains: Mt. Shasta in California, ascent in 1:28:58 on April 1 and round trip, using skis, in 2:30:48 on April 14; Mt. Rainier in Washington (round trip, using skis) in 3:04:31 on May 3; and the Presidential Traverse in New Hampshire (southbound) in 3:31:54 on September 15.
