Horton Johnson, 1929–2022
Horton Johnson, a member of the American Alpine Club since 1967, died on January 21, 2022. A graduate of Van Nuys (California) High School and the Sparling School of Deep Sea Diving, Horton began mountaineering in 1948 after serving in the armed forces in WWII. He joined the Sierra Club and its Rock Climbing Section and went on to summit all of California’s 14,000-foot peaks, many other Sierra peaks, several big mountains in the Pacific Northwest, and Denali (1970). He also climbed in Peru and Bolivia, summiting Nevado Illimani in 1985.
In addition to his love for climbing, Horton had more than 60 years of experience in sailing, scuba diving, and snorkeling. He spent 33 years as a telecommunication technician with AT&T and was married to Rosalie Johnson for 60 years, raising a daughter and a son.
