In August 2020, Jared Leader, Bryan Miller, and Heath Rowland freed The Illness on the east face of Point 12,612’, also known as the Shield. Fred Beckey, Franziska Garrett, and James Garrett started work on this route in 1988. After another trip in 1997, it was finally completed in 1999, at 5.10 A3, by John Chilton, James Garrett, and Ryan Hokanson (see AAJ 2000). Fixing ropes to clean the dirty cracks over a number of days, Leader, Miller, and Rowland freed the route in ten pitches at 5.11-.
