On September 10, Steven Grunwald, 24, was reported missing by a friend. His car was found parked in the Glacier Gorge parking lot in Rocky Mountain National Park the same day. Grunwald was last seen on August 28 and his exact plans were unknown, but he was thought to be attempting the Glacier Gorge Traverse, a 19-mile route that includes multiple technical summits up to 5.7. After an extensive ground and aerial search, his body was found at the top of the McHenry’s Notch Couloir, between McHenry’s and Powell peaks, on September 14. Grunwald is believed to have died from a fall, though the cause is unknown. This incident is a reminder of the vital importance of telling someone your plans or itinerary before a solo trip into the mountains, which can greatly speed a rescue or ease the burden of searchers in case something goes wrong.
