Peak 10,259’, North Face, Cowboy Killers
Montana, Anaconda Range
On September 29, in early winter conditions, Matias Francis and I climbed what we believe to be a new route on the north face of Peak 10,259' (45.981151, -113.441929) in the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness.
After seeing some recent pictures of the area from a friend of a friend in Missoula, Matias and I decided to head into the range. To our knowledge, the only previously recorded ascent of the face was by Dylan Hertz and Matt Klug in fall 2008—they christened the face the Beaver Wall (5.9).
We approached via Maloney Basin and began by soloing up a left-trending snow ramp (left of the original route) and roped up at the base of a dihedral/chimney feature. From there we climbed five more pitches, trending generally up and left, and encountered sustained mixed climbing and winter conditions.
Once we hit the summit snow slope, we soloed to the ridgeline and then traversed to the summit of Peak 10,259', which lies directly east of Warren Peak. We named the route Cowboy Killers (400m, 5.8 AI2 R M6).
