Clear Creek, Forlorn Pinnacle, South Face

Wyoming, Wind River Range

In mid-September, Oliver Deshler and I returned to the Clear Creek drainage in the northern Winds to attempt the south face of Forlorn Pinnacle (11,660’), which is actually a rooster comb of separate spires at the south end of Osborn Mountain. (Deshler and Jenkins climbed several new routes in this area in 2009. See AAJ 2010.) Staying in the gully directly west of the Fickle Finger—a stunning pillar—we climbed the central tower in eight pitches, 5.10 C1, topping out at 3 p.m. The summit was a true pinnacle, so we chopped off a chunk of the rope and slung the top to rappel. We had hoped for more ascents, but a snowstorm swept in that night. It was still snowing two days later, so we slip-slided our way out.
