A Peak and Blackwell Glacier Area, New Ice and Mixed Routes

Montana, Cabinet Mountains
Author: Erik Rieger. Climb Year: 2015. Publication Year: 2016.

In February and March, Scott Coldiron and partners climbed two long new routes in the Cabinet Mountains. On February 22, Coldiron and Christian Thompson climbed Blackwell Falls (900’, WI5 M4), a mostly ice route below the northeast side of A Peak (8,634’), fed by the Blackwell Glacier. They descended the route. On March 7, Beu Carrilo, Coldiron, Benjamin Erdmann, and Jonah Job climbed Unprotected Four-Play (2,000’, AI4+ M6 R) on the left side of the northeast face of A Peak. The route ends a few hundred feet below the summit, where the ice ends, and the group walked off to descend. Coldiron, Joe Lind, and Jeff Zickler have developed other four- to five-pitch ice climbs in a drainage adjacent to Blackwell Glacier; however, details are lacking.
