Pico Los Zondinos, Dioses del Ocaso

Argentina, Central Andes
Author: Gabriel Fava. Climb Year: 2015. Publication Year: 2016.

From March 20–22, Roberto Piriz and I climbed a new route on a rocky satellite peak of Cerro Tolosa (5,432m), known as Pico Los Zondinos (4,850m). [See AAJ 2014 for more info about Cerro Tolosa.] We started our journey from the town of Las Cuevas. Our route starts on a lower-angle ramp and then ascends the steep, upper west-facing buttress of the peak, with a five-star, dream bivouac. The climbing is connected by good cracks on okay rock and protects with Camalots. We roped up for approximately 15 pitches on the upper buttress (about 550m of climbing). We call the route Dioses del Ocaso (“Gods of the Sunset,” 1,100m, 6c) because of the incredible views and sunset on the climb.
