Metro New York Section

Author: Philip Erard, Chair. Climb Year: 2014. Publication Year: 2015.

Despite the heavy involvement of the Metro NY Section in preparations for the AAC’s Annual Benefit Dinner in Manhattan in January 2015, the section maintained an active series of outdoor and indoor events throughout the year. Once again we journeyed to the Adirondacks to ice climb and ski in January and to hike, rock climb, and canoe in May. These events, always sell-outs, have been a fixture on the section’s calendar for a quarter century. In Club Activities I 389 June we hosted two memorable sit-down dinners and slideshows, one with Jimmy Chin, the famed adventure photographer, and the other with Wade Davis and Conrad Anker on the British expeditions to Everest in the 1920s. This theme was repeated in a special screening at the Rubin Museum of John Noel’s historic film on the doomed Mallory-Irvine expedition of 1924. The section’s traditional Annual Black Tie Dinner in December was postponed to the following year due to the proximity to the AAC’s annual dinner. However, as a substitute we hosted Ueli Steck in a reception and slideshow attended by more than 500. Since 1980, when I assumed the chairmanship of the New York Section, I have dutifully chronicled our local happenings on these pages. This is my last such submission, as I am retiring from that post, to be succeeded by Howard Sebold. Howard has been one of our most active and valuable volunteers, in a section that has many. My thanks go to all who have helped make the Metro NY Section such a vibrant climbing community.
