Great White Wall, Any Color You Like As Long As It’s Black
Colorado, Black Canyon of the Gunnison
In October, Mike Brumbaugh and Rob Pizem climbed a possible new route/variation on the Great White Wall, located on the eastern side of the Long Draw: Any Color You Like As Long As It’s Black (12 pitches, 5.11+ PG).
The Great White Wall has a number of other known climbs in the vicinity of Brumbaugh and Pizem's route. In 1989 Rob Schmidt and Rich Strang climbed Great White Wall (IV 5.10+), and in 1998 Andy Dodson and Cameron Tague climbed the Tufnel-McGee (V 5.11+). These lines are both shown in the guidebook Black Canyon Rock Climbs. In 2002, the wall saw two new routes, which are not in the current guidebook: Super Wuss (IV 5.11-, Cochran-Wharton, AAJ 2003), which climbs the large red arête left of Great White Wall, and Death Camas Dihedrals (IV 5.10+ R/X, Donson-Murphy, AAJ 2003), which climbs a line of steep corners and arêtes (its exact location is unknown).
Brumbaugh and Pizem’s new route is located right of the route Great White Wall and may climb a significant portion of the route Tufnel-McGee. It was established top down and cleaned on rappel. They found two older bolts on the route but believed a previous ascent was improbable, given the amount of loose rock. They added a few bolts for protection and belays and redpointed the route on October 6.
