Falling Rock - Fall on Rock, Not Anchored
Washington, North Cascades National Park, Forbidden Peak
The body of Tyler Barton (31) from Seattle was recovered in North Cascades National Park on Sunday, September 15, by park rangers, supported by a contracted helicopter from HiLine Helicopters of Darrington. Barton and his partner had summited Forbidden Peak via the west ridge on September 14 and were descending when the accident occurred. Several climbing parties were on the west ridge at the time. As the climber descended a commonly used gully, using a series of rappels, he was hit by a falling rock. This triggered his fatal fall of approximately 300 feet to a rock and glacier moat. He was not anchored when hit by the rock. His partner was uninjured. Climbers who had witnessed the fall hiked out from Boston Basin and notified rangers at 10:30 p.m. Another climbing party aided Barton’s partner in completing the descent. The next day, park rangers completed the body recovery via helicopter by midday, delayed the night before due to fog and weather. (Sources: NPS Morning Report and the Seattle Times.)
