Fall on Snow (Crevasse Jump), Exceeding Abilities

Washington, Mt. Rainier, Emmons/Winthrop
Climb Year: 2013. Publication Year: 2014.

On July 21 at 1:30 p.m., mountain guide Chris Watson reported an injured climber via 911. Watson, who was with another guide, reported that Rody Senner (31) had jumped over a crevasse at 11,300 feet on the Emmons/Winthrop route. She sustained a possible tibia-fibula fracture. Watson reported Senner was stable but not ambulatory. She was climbing with two others, including party leader Alex Mondan, who had previously climbed the mountain via multiple routes.

Analysis

Senner was descending the Emmons-Winthrop route when the leader of her climbing party jumped across a crevasse. She followed suit but upon landing felt her right ankle roll and heard an audible crunch. She was wearing crampons. She felt that the jump was too much, given her abilities. (Source: Ranger Worstell.)
