Falling Ice
California, Mt. Shasta, Avalanche Gulch
Climb Year: 2013.
Publication Year: 2014.
On June 27, James Brown (30s), a Sierra Wilderness Seminars (SWS) guide, was struck by a large ice boulder in the lower leg and knocked off his feet. Ranger Nick Meyers was notified by SWS’s Dave Cressman about 8:15 a.m. Cressman stated that Brown could not walk and potentially had broken his leg/ankle and needed a helicopter. Meyers called Siskiyou County SAR and, with proper approval, ordered a helicopter. Meanwhile, a couple of other guides were able to assist Brown down to Lake Helen from his initial accident location. A California Highway Patrol helicopter arrived shortly after the request and was able to pick up Brown at Lake Helen.
