D.C. Section

Author: Simon Carr, Co-chair. Climb Year: N/A. Publication Year: 2014.

The section’s major climbing trip was held over Columbus Day weekend. With help from the Southern Appalachian and Mid Atlantic sections, we organized a joint meet at Seneca Rocks. Despite uncooperative weather, members ascended various Seneca classics between storms. Our section also held a Christmas dinner with the Potomac Mountain Club, along with other climbing and social events.

In April we joined AAC Executive Director Phil Powers for a day of climbing at Carderock. The subsequent dinner provided an opportunity to quiz Phil about the future direction of the club. In August, Rob Graver and Mike Baur gave a noteworthy presentation on their ascents of the Ham and Eggs couloir and Shaken Not Stirred on the Mooses Tooth in Alaska’s Ruth Gorge.

Members completed ascents in Alaska and the Wind Rivers, on Mt. Slesse and Mt. Rainier, and throughout the Northeast. Several others climbed in the U.K., making two separate ascents of the Old Man of Hoy. Members climbed a number of South American volcanoes, while Chris Clarke, currently based in La Paz, put up new routes in the Bolivian Andes.
