Piramide Negra, Cerro Andrea, and other peaks
Argentina-Chile, Cordillera de Darwin
From September 29-October 18, Michael Ganter, Jörn Heller, Wilfrid Henselmann, Klaus Hildenbrand, Thomas Nieberle, Hans-Jörg Schelb, and I did the probable first ascents of a number of peaks in the Cordillera Darwin. We left from Punta Arenas, sailing south down the Canal Magdalena and then through narrow fjords to reach the Canal Beagle, upon which we traveled east. We used our sailboat to access minor fjords and completed a number of the climbs using skis.
In Fjord Martinez (54°28.073’ S, 070°36.34’ W) we climbed Cerro Condor (ca 870m), Cerro Aguila (ca 930m), and Piramide Negra (ca 1,120m). In Fjord Bahia King (54°26.065’ S¸ 071°16.399’ W) we climbed Aguja Anna (ca 790m). In Fjord Vetisquero we did a traverse of the Timbales Mountains (which range in elevation from ca 865m to 927m). We also climbed Cerro Nicole (ca 1,050m), Cerro Astrid (ca 1,080m, 54°49.753’ S, 070°17.154’ W), Cerro Nicola (ca 950m, 54°49.939’ S, 070°17.729’ W), and Cerro Novara (ca 935m, 54°49.753’ S, 070°17.154’ W). Lastly, in Fjord Pia, we climbed Brazo Pia Este and Cerro Andrea (ca 1,400m, 54°48.916’ S, 069°28.473’ W).
