Mt. Walker (2,350m); Peak 1,712m; The Catwalk, traverse

Antarctica, Antarctic Peninsula
Author: Damien Gildea. Climb Year: 2013. Publication Year: 2014.

A French-Canadian team aboard Spirit of Sydney made the second known ascent of Mt. Walker (2,350m). They also made the first ascent of a 1,712m peak above the Montgolfier Glacier, and completed a south-to-north ski traverse through the Catwalk, a narrow section of the Peninsula’s spine connecting the Herbert and Detroit plateaus.

Walker was tried in 2002 by Alun Hubbard’s team and first climbed in 2005, when it was thought to be one of the highest virgin summits on the Peninsula. Six members of a British Army Expedition, under the leadership of Richard Patterson, made the ascent during the first traverse of the Forbidden Plateau, the long, narrow icefield extending from Charlotte Bay to Flanders Bay on the west coast of the Peninsula.
