Fremont Peak (not to summit), west face, Marmot’s Tooth; Cirque of the Sun, Thunder Child
Wyoming, Wind River Range
In August, Eva Christ and Jake Tipton climbed a new route on the west aspect of Fremont Peak in Titcomb Basin, summiting a sub-spire they called the Marmot’s Tooth. The spire lies just left (north) of the West Face Spire. They called the 12-pitch route Beginner’s Mind (1,600’, IV 5.11-) and rappelled the line of ascent from atop the spire.
In September, Jayci Ferrimani and Brady Nuemann climbed a new route, Thunder Child (700’, III 5.11), in a small cirque south of the Monolith (on the east side of Big Sandy Mountain, southeast of the well-known Cirque of the Towers). The cirque lies off the North Fork Trail from Dickinson Park, out of Lander; a permit is required to cross an Indian reservation. They dubbed the area the “Cirque of the Sun” and the wall the “Resolute Buttress.” The route ascends a prominent crack system on the west end of the wall for seven pitches.
