Kingfisher, Return of Mudzilla

Utah, Fisher Towers
Author: Paul Gagner . Climb Year: 2013. Publication Year: 2014.

Over three trips in March and April 2013, Jeremy Aslaksen and I established a new route on the north face of the Kingfisher, between the climbs Dead Again and Hazing. We had spied the line on a rest day the prior year when we established Beak to the Future on the Oracle (AAJ 2013).

At the end of March I made a solo recon trip and carried a bunch of gear and water to the base of the Kingfisher. We then made two more trips to fix pitches on the climb before tagging the summit on a picture-perfect day, April 21. The climb marked our sixth new route in the Fishers in just over three years.

The Return of Mudzilla (V A3) follows thin features connected by a short rivet ladder to a money crack system that shoots uninterrupted toward the capstone. A short traverse and small roof lead over the capstone to typical wide climbing, which ends just right of the start of the last pitch on the normal route (Colorado Northeast Ridge). A short but loose independent pitch reaches the top. As with all of our routes, be prepared with 45 to 50 Peckers and Spectres.
