Fall on Rock, Loose Rock

On September 17, Derek Kelley (34) fell more than 600 feet to his death while climbing North Maroon Peak (14,014 feet). According to reports, Kelley was about 300 feet from the summit when he fell after a boulder came loose. Rescue personnel believe he had been wearing a helmet.

Analysis

While it is understood that rockfall and loose rock are common objective hazards in the mountains, it should be noted that the Maroon Bells (a.k.a. “the Deadly Bells”) are particularly known for these hazards. (Source: Jed Williamson.)
