Fall on Rock - Rappel Error

California, Yosemite Valley, Royal Arches
Climb Year: 2012. Publication Year: 2013.

On May 23 an experienced climber (male, 23) fell while rappelling. He self- rescued and reported the accident when he came to the medical clinic. This is what he wrote on our form: “Rapped off ends of rope on RA descent attempting to clip last bolt station above fourth-class terrain that goes to final rap. Fell 35 feet down slab and impacted with chimney and rock slab. No knots in ends of rope. Possible (likely) talus fracture and ankle sprain. Always tie end-knots and back up rappel.” (Source wishes to remain anonymous.)
