Fall on Snow, Failure to Self-Arrest, Inadequate Equipment - No Crampons

California, Mt. Shasta Wilderness, Avalanche Gulch
Climb Year: 2012. Publication Year: 2013.

On April 21 a man (22) attempted to glissade down Avalanche Gulch below Redbanks. As the snow was too firm, he lost control and slid for 1,500 feet. He suffered abrasions and cuts.

Rangers spoke to the man over the phone and met with him one hour after initial phone contact at a lower elevation. He consented to minor first-aid treatment for cuts and scrapes, and then determined he would continue his self- rescue. He had three or four years of experience. He did not have crampons on. (Editor’s note: This is the most common type of accident on Mt. Shasta.)
