Aconcagua, summary

In the 2012 season, 6,989 people traveled to Aconcagua—3,688 planned to reach the summit, and 3,301 visited the area for trekking. (The preceding season’s figures were 3,497 and 2,630.) The climbers were 18 percent Argentinian and 82 percent from abroad. One climber died, and 203 were evacuated due to diseases and accidents, with 114 evacuated from Plaza de Mulas alone. There was an important helicopter rescue on the south wall. The park has accumulated more personal to account for these increases, including 50 rangers, 18 rescuers, and 22 doctors specialized in high-mountain medicine. In one year, 50 tons of garbage were extracted from the park.
