Volcán Tres Picos, first ascent

Volcán Tres Picos (6,037m) lies northwest of the Pissis massif, outside Catamarca, and until recently was one of the last virgin 6,000m peaks in the Andes. In 2010, Pablo Lukach and party attempted it without success. Lukach returned in January 2013 with Esteban Pacheco. From base camp, they walked a short distance before establishing a camp near the Pissis-Pillán col (ca 4,850m). They established a second camp near Pissis’ west glacier, then crossed the heavily crevassed glacier and walked along the volcano’s enormous crater to both summits, calling their route Wallya Buena.
