On July 19, Canadian climbers Bill Borger Jr. and John Furneaux climbed a new free variation on the far right side of Mt. Thor’s southwest face. They began on July 17, trending up and left toward a large horizontal slope where they likely joined the southwest face route (Berube-Thivierge-Webster, 1994). From the lower-angle break, they traversed directly right, then straight up to gain the previously established south ridge route (5.8), which they followed to the summit. They called their variation the Great Escape (5.10+).
