FALL ON ROCK, INADEQUATE PROTECTION

Colorado, Eldorado Canyon State Park, Roof Routes

On April 22, an experienced climber (24) fell from about 20 feet up on “Kloberdanze” (5.11). As he was trying to clip in to his first piece of protection, his foot slipped, so he fell to the ground. He fractured his left leg. Also of note is that he was not wearing a helmet.

Analysis

Not placing adequate protection on the first pitch is a common problem. It is especially important to do so when the fall is likely to cause serious injury. (Source: Steve Muelhauser, Park Ranger)
