FALLS ON ROCK, PROTECTION PULLED OUT, NO HARD HAT

Colorado, Eldorado State Park, The Bastille

On June 18 and 29, 1994, respectively, two climbers (33 and 40) took falls, had protection pull out, and turn upside down. In the first instance, the victim lost about a quart of blood. In the second case, the victim hit his belayer as he came to a stop. He sustained a broken shoulder. (Source: Steve Muelhauser, Park Ranger)

Analysis

Most climbers at this location do not wear helmets. There is easy access to all climbs from the parking areas. Many climbers these days are recent converts from indoor climbing walls, and it is apparent that protection placement is one key area where these folks need training. (Source: Jed Williamson)
