FALLS ON ROCK, INADEQUATE PROTECTION

Utah, Rig and Little Cottonwood Canyons

The three “official” accident reports from Special Operations Director Thad Moore— Salt Lake City Sheriff's Office—parallel the other reports I have from climbers and guides in this area. There are many more falls than get reported, mostly because the victims self-rescue or are not injured seriously enough to warrant a hospital or ER visit.

The important factor here is the common denominator of cause: “Placed no or inadequate protection.” Local experienced climbers believe that most of those getting in trouble are sport/gym climbers converting to the outdoor cliff world.

Anyone else with experience or opinion regarding this phenomenon should send reports to me. (Source: Jed Williamson)
