FALL ON ROCK, NO HARD HAT, INADEQUATE RELAY

Arizona, Desert Botanical Garden

On March 13, 1993, a 17-year-old Chandler boy suffered minor injuries when he fell 50 feet during a mountain-climbing class at Hole-in-the-Rock near the Desert Botanical Garden.

Derrick Higgins, a novice climber, had rappelled down the face of the mountain and was climbing back up when he slipped and fell, said Steve Jensen, spokesman for the Phoenix Fire Department.

Higgins, who was climbing without a helmet, was one of ten members of a mountain- climbing class conducted by his Gilbert-based Explorer Scout group, Jensen said. (Source: The Arizona Republic, March 14, 1993)
