FALLING ROCK DISLODGED BY CLIMBER

Washington, Mount Shuksan, Fisher Chimneys

On June 20, 1992, Bill Peterson (33) was descending the Fisher Chimneys and was about 200 feet above the base of the summit block when he was struck by a large rock dislodged from above. He fell 20 feet, landed on his pack and helmet (on his head), fell another 20 feet coming to rest on snow and rock. He sustained bruises and minor cuts, and was able to descend on his own along with the rest of the party of six.

Analysis

There is serious rockfall danger on the summit pyramid. A more severe injury was barely avoided. It is a bad idea for students to carry heavy packs in the chimney. (Source: Greg Starling and Tom Whitney, Leader and Assistant Leader of this climb)
