FALL ON ROCK, PROTECTION OR BELAY FAILURE

New Hampshire, Cannon Cliff

In early July, 1983, two climbers from Dartmouth College were on the early section of Wiessner’s (5.6) when the leader (21) fell and was not stopped, either because his protection failed or his belayer was unable to hold him. The total fall was 50— 60 meters, but resulted in no major injury. He was able to walk down without help. (Source: J. Williamson)

Analysis

The start of this route is the hardest part (5.6). The climber was experienced, but his belayer was not. It is the easy climbs which sometimes cause more problems. (Source: J. Williamson)
